Pioneer's PLX-500 direct drive turntable is a versatile and capable Direct Drive Turntable for the budget conscious.
Boasting USB and line-out connections this deck is aimed at the 'vinyl lover' who may want to explore the world of DJ'ing and Turntablism.
Based on Pioneer's flagship PLX-1000, released in 2014, the PLX-500 benefits from a line level outputs & a USB connection meaning you can plug it straight into your speaker monitors without the need for an external amp; also, with the on-board USB connectivity, you can couple the deck with Pioneer's Rekordbox software and DVS Plus Pack; add a compatible DJM mixer and RB-VS1-K Control Vinyl and you can play and scratch digital files.
This turntable is ideal for scratching due to the units ‘high-torque’ direct drive operation; the unit is more than capable of the usual cueing or scratching duties DJs’ require.
The PLX-500 is aimed at the home listener as well as DJs. The unit can be used in the home within a traditional Hi-Fi setup, however the outputs are line level and most audiophiles will be mortified at not being able to use their own phono stage! But for the majority of vinyl lovers such outputs are of great convenience; another great convenience worth mentioning is the compatibility with Pioneer's Rekordbox DVS plus pack which, as well making it possible to play and scratch MP3s via a DJM mixer and the RB-VS1-K Control Vinyl, enables you to transform your vinyl’s into digital files through the USB port.
Cosmetically, like the PLX 1000, the PLX-500 bears a resemblance to the Technics SL-1200G and is designed to be as easy to install as possible. It’s supplied with a fitted cartridge & stylus and is packaged with its accessories including a slip mat and 45 RPM adapter.
The PLX-500s’ have the added benefit of a USB output that allows you to record your vinyl collection to Pioneer DJ’s free Rekordbox software. The software has a feature that enables it to detect the silence between tracks, allowing albums to be automatically recorded as separate tracks.
The Pioneer DJ PLX-500 is available now at whybuynew.co.uk in crisp white (PLX-500-W) or slick black (PLX-500-K) and priced at £299.
The PLX-500 promises to be suited for both the playback and DJ’ing of vinyl. With its aggressive pricing, relative to the other Pioneer decks; it’s positioned as the “home” model, with the PLX-1000 costing about twice as much mirroring the way Pioneer has differentiated its digital players, with the XDJ series as the “home” model and the CDJ nexus for “pros.”
Pioneer has claimed that the PLX-500 borrows some of the great sound quality of the 1000 “The shortest possible audio routing from the stylus to the outputs reduces distortion, and the phono and line outputs mean you can connect directly to your sound system or powered speakers to enjoy warm sound.”
USB for recording. You can digitize your record collection with the free Pioneer Rekordbox Software which will detect silences and slice up tracks into different files for you, ready to tag.
The High-torque, direct drive system means turntablists can use this and Pioneer supplies the complete package; including the “Rekordbox DVS Plus Pack” which works with Pioneer’s DJM mixer and RB-VS1-K Control Vinyl creating a solid rival to products like Native Instruments’ Traktor Scratch.
The whole loaded unit weighs less than 11kg and comes with everything you need. There’s a USB and phono/RCA cables. You also get a bunch of accessories in the box: slip mat, dust cover with jacket stand, adapter for EP record, balance weight, headshell (with cartridge & stylus), shell weight, power cord, USB cord and audio conversion cord (Stereo pin plug (female) to stereo mini plug(male).
With just one product, Pioneer are covering a lot of different users’ needs; from digitising those records in your collection, being able to DJ with them or for use as an inexpensive turntable that you can scratch on.
